Shotokan Kenkojuku Blog Introduction

Welcome to the Shotokan Kenkojuku Karate Do Blog.

The purpose of this blog is to share information about Shotokan Kenkojuku, including its origin and current practitioners.
As an introduction, it is important to mention that Funakoshi Sensei was one of the first Okinawan instructors to teach Karate in mainland Japan. 'Shoto' was Funakoshi's pen name when writing poetry, and that's why his dojo was called "Shotokan" (the house of Shoto). Funakoshi Sensei and his students also taught Karate at the Shotokan Dojo and beyond, including universities.
Tomosaburo Okano, Funakoshi's student, founded Shotokan Kenkojuku in 1942. Kenkojuku is part of the Shotokan family, similar to organizations like JKA or Shotokai. According to our tradition, we recognize Gichin Funakoshi and Tomosaburo Okano Sensei as branch founders.

Here, you'll find information about Shotokan Kenkojuku Karate-Do, particularly stories shared by direct students of Tomosaburo Okano Sensei or his students who were sent to the USA.
